Sunday 19th January - bike **** - Trimley Marshes – sunny.
With the cold but sunny weather continuing today Mag and I were keen to get
out on the bikes but where as we have done all the local routes and
couldn’t be bothered to take the bikes in the van anywhere! So, in the
end we decided to pack a sandwich and head over to Trimley Marshes for a
birdwatching picnic in the winter flood hide trying to avoid as many muddy
paths! It was nice to get away from the crowds as the prom yesterday was
very busy although the Reserve carpark was full. We enjoyed some lovely
Suffolk countryside as we biked down towards the end of Felixstowe dock and
the River Orwell. About half way down the track to the marshes we spotted
ten deer in a field looking at us and stopped to take a couple of pics:) On
reaching the Orwell I head up onto the seawall footpath while Mag continues
below but both prove to be hard going in the wet/muddy conditions. The
views are as usual stunning down the river towards Levington Marina, one of
my favourite windsurfing venues and across the marshes. We are lucky to get
the winter flood bird hide all to ourselves and enjoy our sandwiches.
Sadly, birds are a bit thin on the ground or should I say water. A few
ducks and geese and nothing much else, the highlight are the Shovellers and
a big flock of geese flying over. After a pleasant lunch we head back still
in brilliant sunshine and take the route past the dock view point crossing
the railway, through Langer Park and home. We were out 2hrs. 30mins
covering ten miles so a nice weekend was had by all :)
